My school visits are designed

For Kindergarten and First-Grade Students

Together, we’ll explore different types of jellyfish and their characteristics. Then, I’ll read Phyllis Floats and get kids moving during reading comprehension activities. Also built into the session are concepts from science, social studies, and math.

In thanks for inviting me to meet your students and introduce them to jellyfish like Phyllis, I’ll leave behind a complimentary copy of Phyllis Floats for your school library.

What I Need During My Visit:

  • Smart TV or similar display to aid my interactive presentation
  • Chair to sit in as I read to students
  • Small table, desk, or podium to set my computer upon
  • Gathering space where the children can sit, stand, and wiggle a bit; a library or gym is ideal

What I Need Before My Visit:

  • Name and phone number of the school’s liaison who will help with communications and scheduling
  • Assistance in distributing book order forms and announcement of event to school families, about one week prior to visit
  • Meeting with liason or other school representative who is familiar with the technology I’ll have access to and is able to assist during my initial equipment test

Rates and Other Info

Presentation Fees

Minimum booking fee is $150 for one to two presentations, each lasting twenty-five minutes, with five additional minutes of passing time between classes. Every additional presentation beyond the minimum booking is $75 per addition.

I’m happy to come to your school for as little as one to as many as eight classroom sessions in a day. But please note that, to allow me to engage more personally with students and their teachers, I prefer meeting with one or two classes at a time, as opposed to all-school assemblies.

Travel Costs

$.67 per mile when traveling by car to and from Livonia, Michigan; to and from Brooklyn, Michigan; or to and from Lakewood Ranch, Florida.

Locations outside these communities require additional planning and related expenses.

Please contact Kelly for scheduling options or to discuss your interest further.

TESTIMONIALS FROM EDUCATORS

Wow! What an amazing experience we had with author Kelly Bixby and her children’s book Phyllis Floats. Kelly read her new book to my class of first graders for an author’s visit. She made the book come alive. She had fun props that she used during her reading. She helped students to understand some of the language and vocabulary in the book. The illustrations in the book were vibrant. My students and I had a great time listening to her story.

Kelly did such a great job keeping the kids engaged and interested! I love how she incorporated information about the jellyfish to tie into science standards and show the kids how fiction text can also teach us about nonfiction facts. It was great how she got the kids up and moving, gave them hand signals for the different animals, and showed them in a hands-on way, how long the tentacles can be!! She was awesome!
